No… It Isn’t “The Fairy Pools”

Off on a rant today having been to Glen Brittle… and seen all those signs for “The Fairy Pools”. It really winds me up when places are renamed to suit the English language, particularly when it tries to apply a new narrative of history and mythology to a place. See “Wailing Widow Falls” and “Puffin Cove” for other examples that spring to mind! Erasing the old names, and their old meanings, distances us from the landscapes history and, I think, is a real crime. It removes that connection that we have to our forefathers and the stories of the landscape around us.

I didn’t actually venture down to Coire na Creiche this time, which translates through to “The Corrie of Plunder” which suggests a more exciting past than anything to do with fairies. Funny enough, for those of a more heavy metal persuasion, it can also translate to “The Cradle of Filth”. Which amused me no end!
