Fujfilm GFX 100RF - Initial Thoughts

A couple of days ago I “acquired” a Fujifilm GFX 100RF for that best of prices… unfortunately I am sworn to secrecy on the details. I have shot my photo a day on it for the last couple of days plus today as I slowly get my head around it - and my initial impressions are that this thing is absolutely awesome. That is before adding any proviso about it being a “compact”.

The things that worried me most, and stopped me actually trying to buy one, were the fixed lens and size of it as a “compact”. So this initial view is going to address these points, plus a quick early thought on image quality.

First up - a fixed lens camera. This is surely a big step back? And it is… kind of… the lens itself is a 28mm equivalent, f4, prime - which works out at an f3.5 in 35mm terms - so not the fastest, bit kinda okay. 28mm though - this is not a focal length I use! I tend to shoot either 24mm or wider, or I shoot at 50mm or longer. So this is a slightly tighter view than my usual for general landscape work. I have used it a bit and it’s not too much of an issue in reality, plus I have added a Ricoh wide angle adapter made for the GR Digital series and that transforms it to a 20mm lens which gets quite interesting. The adapter doesn’t seem to aversely impact the photographs when stopped down a bit either.

It is big for a compact though, there is no getting away from that. It would fit in a big pocket, but otherwise it will need to be in some kind of a case/bag. But it is smaller than my Nikons with a lens, plus with my big mitts the form factor makes it a comfortable camera to use!

Image quality is stunning. I mean… really stunning. I haven’t really done much with it as yet but I am impressed from my playing around shots! I will give some proper thoughts once I have spent some quality time shooting some proper stuff!

This does lead me to two other thoughts - firstly, I want to try and probably buy, it’s smaller siblings - both the X100 VI as a pocketable adventure camera, and the X Half as an every day carriable pocket camera. I am also looking at a big GFX mirrorless system to really raise my commercial game!

Who needs to make profits?
